What causes a bunion?
The bump commonly referred to as a bunion is actually caused by changes in the bone structure of the foot. The first metatarsal bone of the big toe begins to angle outward, which in turn leads to the big toe pointing inward. The deformity starts as a slight lean of the big toe and gets progressively worse over time as the bones begin to shift. The underlying cause of bunions is hereditary but the progression can be sped along by poor footwear choices.
