De Quervain’s Thumb Pain Causes and Solutions

What is De Quervain’s?

De Quervain's Tenosynovitis is a tendon injury that affects the thumb side of the wrist, commonly after activities that require repetitive thumb and wrist motions such as gardening or racquet sports.

What are the symptoms of De Quervain’s?

The tendons become inflamed, causing pain at the base of the thumb and sometimes into the forearm if left untreated. De Quervain’s often causes pain, stiffness, and possible swelling in the thumb and wrist. The pain may increase while turning your wrist, grasping, or making a fist.

How will a brace help treat De Quervains?

The best way to treat De Quervain's Tenosynovitis is by resting the joint. Since daily activities commonly require the thumb joint, it is recommended to use a brace to stabilize the joint and limit range of motion during the rehabilitation process. For most cases of De Quervain’s, a thumb spica/splint will provide the stabilization required for recovery. If the pain has spread into the wrist and forearm, we recommend to choose the Wrist Brace with Thumb Splint for greater support and pain relief.
